Your First Visit

You're unique, and so is the reason why you're coming for treatment.  On your first visit, I'll have you complete a comprehensive intake form.  (This is also available on-line for you to fill out at your convenience.)   The acupuncture intake form asks  a lot of questions about your current state of health, past illnesses, and family history. These questions are important because the holistic approach of Oriental medicine takes everything into account--your diet, exercise, social and work life, as well as your physical health.  Your current symptoms may not seem related to past health issues, but our bodies are complex landscapes and everything that happens to them leaves its mark.

After reviewing your intake form, we will discuss your condition, and I'll examine your pulse and tongue, and palpate some of the channels on your arms and legs. This, along with the intake form, helps me make a diagnosis and come up with a treatment plan.  The acupuncture points I choose will depend on your condition, but you can expect approximately 20 needles. Once the needles are inserted, I will leave you to lie comfortably for 15-20 minutes with the needles in place. Many people find acupuncture treatment deeply relaxing, and it is not uncommon for patients to fall asleep during this time.

Please have a light meal or snack 1-3 hours prior to acupuncture, and if at all possible, avoid caffeine, and be well hydrated.  Please also wear loose fitting clothing that you can comfortably roll up past your elbows or knees.  Most of the points I use are in this area, though on occasion I will use other points on your abdomen or back.

Know that your session is your "me time" to disconnect from the rest of the day. Please be prepared to silence your phone for the 45 minutes while you rest on the treatment table.  Be sure to arrive a few minutes early, and bring a list of any and all medications, supplements and herbs that you may be taking.
